In 1995 Industrial Door Engineering manufactured and supplied a high quality roller shutter door for inclusion on the MV Solitaire. At the time of construction it was the world’s largest pipe-laying ship measuring 300m in length and weighed in at 96,000T. This door would form part of the portside of the ship and have to operate at sea 365 days of the year; as such it needed to be of the highest design and quality.
Fast forward 20 years later and the owners of MV Solitaire decided that a refit of the vessel was due and as part of this the original shutter would be replaced by a higher quality roller shutter. Impressed with the standard and quality of the original roller shutter that had operated for 20 years in some of the toughest conditions possible for an engineered product, they contacted Industrial Door Engineering again to see how they could help them.
Looking at the plans from 1995 it soon became apparent to the lead sales executive Ray Bassett that the design of the original roller shutter would need to be updated whilst still retaining the quality and high standards that had seen a door previously survive 20 years at sea. Working alongside the ships engineers and IDEs factory and contract teams a plan was hatched to manufacture a marine grade roller shutter using a zinc phosphate powder coated 18 swg curtain with our speciality tropicalised 460v 60hz motor and stainless steel fittings.
In late September 2015 work was completed on the manufacture of the door, measuring an impressive 4020mm in width by 3882mm in height, the door was shipped to Rotterdam before onwards transport to meet the vessel in Singapore. A few weeks later work has begun on installing the new roller shutter onboard the vessel before it goes back to laying 9km of ocean piping a day.
